If I had listened to some of the naysayers on the forums I would never have enrolled with Recording Connection. I would have always wondered to myself, if only. Fortunately I did some research and made up my own mind and I am so glad I did. This was easily a no brainer. Work in a modern up to date studio, work alongside genuine working professionals. Plus if you are good enough, get the opportunity to work full time in a superbly equipped studio. I understand that there are no guarantees in this business, but if you work hard, study and listen to instructions there is no reason why you shouldn’t stand a good chance of making it in this industry. Did you know that radio advertising is one of the largest growing industries in the US right now? Even in this tough financial climate companies are happy to pour money into promoting their goods and services over the airwaves. I have just left high school and am looking to find work in the recording industry. I cannot afford to go to University for 4 years. A friend from school told me about Recording Connection. To get the opportunity to produce something from nothing is many people’s dream, it certainly was mine. So when I got the chance to make tracks in a fully specked recording studio thanks to Recording Connection I jumped at the chance. They have a mentor / apprentice program that fits you like a glove. For a while I have been thinking about enrolling with Recording Connection on one of their recording programs here in New Orleans. My mentor works me hard because he wants to be sure that I will be in it for the long haul. Well I am, totally. Over the last 4 months we have gone through just about everything you would need to know in order to get started as a recording engineer. His studios are state of the art. He also gives me loads of homework assignments and a list of books to read and videos to watch. Like I say it’s a lot of hard work, but it will be worth it in the end. I was trained by a guy who actually works full time in a real recording studio, not by some college professor with corduroy elbow patches on his tweed sports jacket along. Last Summer I was fortunate enough to be able to enroll in one of recording connection’s mentor/apprentice programs near my home in Chicago. A lot of people think just because they mess around with their record decks at home it makes them proficient enough to work in a recording studio. Sorry to disappoint you but it doesn’t. You need to practice your skills hard and work alongside real professionals, studying how they work. A friend of mine suggested I give recording connection a call as I was very much interested in the recording business. However I was very skeptical about this kind of course, as I assumed you would need at least 2 years to learn the basics of recording. Despite my reluctance I went to meet with someone from recording connection and after they explained everything to me my mind was put at ease. They explained that I would need to be willing to work hard and listened without hesitation. I would also be tested regularly and evaluated by my personal mentor. He also explained that if I work hard and do well, there is always the chance of being hired by the very studio I would be interning in. That was 2 months ago and I have to say the folks were totally on the ball. It has been hard and I have had a lot to take in, but it has also been a lot of fun working on professional equipment alongside real artists. One of my friends has just completed his program with recording connection and was so pleased with the results that he has Just convinced me to enroll. I am about to commence my mentor/ apprentice program with recording connection. I have to say; so far I’m really impressed with how I have been treated. The very best thing I could ever have done was enrolling in the recording connection program. I have been apprenticing at a really great studio close to where I live so there is very little travel involved. This is great because it means I can be there any spare time I have and most weekends. I have been hearing some negative comments on some forums about the mentor/ apprentice program and recording connection in particular and felt it was my place to air some of my views. It seems that people get very heated up when it comes to education and training. If people have a good experience with their particular form of training, they become very blinkered in their view of training. They will not accept that other sorts of training will actually work. And there are those who maybe had a bad experience, they are so angry and bitter that they will not only attack the system of training, but also anyone who likes this form of training. Some people go into the mentor program thinking it is a guaranteed sure fire hit to get into the studio of their dreams. They do not knuckle down and do any work, thinking that their mentor will throw job offers at them. When it doesn’t happen or doesn’t happen within their particular timescale, they attack the system and the training company. Recording connection can get you into the industry, but you also must do you bit as well and work tirelessly and diligently to succeed. Recording connection is a tool, to get you into the business; however you must be prepared to get your hands dirty. Five years ago my son Eric was running around with gangs and causing all sorts of problems. He was an 18 year old with a huge chip on his shoulder and a lot to prove. It came to a head when he was arrested helping to steal a neighbor’s car and joyriding it around town. The judge gave him a choice, sort yourself out or go to jail and seeing as he always had a love of music, my wife and I enrolled him on a recording connection. We had nothing to lose. I have been working at a prestigious recording studio in Atlanta for 6 years now. I began as an assistant recording engineer and have worked up to become studio manager. No money was paid until I was 100% happy. My mentor explained in detail what recording connection would do for me, he also explained what was expected of me in return namely hard work and determination. He then arranged for me to work at a local recording studio 3-4 times a week. He also set me assignments that had to be completed before I could progress to the next stage. These assignments mainly involved hands on working in the studio which was fine with me as the more time I spent there the better. I was given projects to undertake and a set time in which to complete them, which is good because in the real world you will have deadlines. My mentor also introduced me to various studio bosses and key level staff within the recording industry, thus allowing me to mingle with likeminded individuals and promote myself. One of these studio bosses was the man who ultimately hired me after I completed my course. I have nothing but praise for recording connection and it’s mentors and I would have no problems recommending them to friends who wish to get into this business.

After watching a movie what sticks in your mind? The characters, your favorite scene or possibly the director’s work? To me it’s the score, you know the “background” music. To me though, it’s a lot more than just background music. It sets the scene, adds tension and In some movies is an additional character. My favorite score composer is Hans Zimmer, to me he is a musical genius and has provided some of the finest scores to many of the finest movies to be seen on the silver screen. Gladiator, The Da Vinci Code, Angles & Demons, The Last Samurai and also the recently aired HBO War time miniseries The Pacific to name but a few of his masterpieces. This man knows how to score a movie. Watch any interview of him and he comes across as highly confident, maybe even big headed, but when you hear his music you know at least he can back it up. If I could even have just a fragment of his talent I would be the happiest man alive.
